Corporate Vision

According to Hyun Jin Cho, Hyundai-Kia Chairman Mong-Koo Chung believes that in order to continue to grow the Kia brand, the company needs to step up its investments in cutting-edge technology. The results of this will be “to drive low-carbon, green growth through the development and commercialization of environmentally friendly cars.”

Current Plans

Hyundai-Kia has already committed to begin mass production of an LPI hybrid vehicle in the second half of 2009. Based on the Hyundai Elantra/Kia Spectra platform, the LPI utilizes a 1.6 liter engine modified to run on liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and a 15 kilowatt electric motor. Electricity is stored in advanced Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) batteries. The company will also introduce a mid-size gasoline and LPG hybrid car sometime in 2010.

Future Plans

Cho outlined Kia’s future plans by stating that, “Additionally, the Hyundai-Kia Group will pursue early commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell cars. Currently underway is a test run of 66 vehicles equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system developed independently by the Group. From 2010, the number of test cars will be increased to 500 and a system for low volume production will be set up. The plan is to begin mass production in 2012.”
