Newest Kia model gets highest safety rating in NHTSA frontal crash test.

NCAP

Here at Summit Place Kia in metro Detroit, we wanted you to be aware of the latest Kia news regarding the new Soul and it has to do with the NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) is designed to rate a vehicle’s crash worthiness as well as its rollover safety. These ratings are assigned after information is gathered following controlled crash and rollover tests that are conducted at the administration’s research facilities.

The NCAP program was started in 1978 and, at the time, consisted only of frontal crash test ratings. In 1997, side crash ratings were added to the program, while rollover ratings were begun with model year 2001 vehicles. Once a vehicle is tested, the results are displayed in an easy to understand “star” rating system with 1 star being the lowest score and 5 stars representing the highest score

Each year, the NHTSA chooses a number of vehicles that have either a high predicted sales volume, a number of structural changes (new models) or have new safety equipment. Vehicles are then purchased through car dealers as an assurance that the test vehicle represents what is actually available in the marketplace.

Results not yet official

According to a recent article on the Kia World blog site, the new Kia Soul has finally been crash tested by the NHTSA. While the results are limited, the NHTSA has announced that the Soul received the highest possible 5 star safety rating for both the driver as well as the front passenger in their full frontal crash test.

The outstanding safety rating is due in part to the Soul’s long list of standard safety features that include:

Driver and front passenger frontal airbags
Driver and front passenger seat mounted side impact airbags
First and second row side curtain airbags
Occupancy sensor for front passenger seat
ABS and driveline traction control
Height adjustable front safety belts
Front seatbelt pre-tensioners
Halogen headlights
Power door locks with 2 stage unlock
Rear child safety door locks
Ignition disable
Low tire pressure warning
