Kia to offer ecologically friendly technology in the US market within two years

The view from the Summit
One of the advantages of being a metro Detroit Kia dealer is that there are a number of important automotive conferences held just a short distance from those of us here at Summit Place Kia.
This year is no exception as the recently concluded Society of Automotive Engineers SAE World Congress brought some interesting news from the Hyundai-Kia group’s senior powertrain manager.

Idle Stop and Go
Kia’s Idle Stop and Go technology, called ISG, is already either standard or optional on a few models in Europe, most notably the Kia cee’d and the recently introduced Kia Venga.
In operation, the start-stop system automatically switches a vehicle’s engine off when it is either stopped or when it decelerates to less than 2.5 miles per hour. Once the driver releases the brake or the clutch pedal, the system re-starts the engine. According to Hyundai-Kia, this fuel-saving system will be available on a number of vehicles here in North America within the next two years.
“Start-stop will be a key part of our development activity in the next two product cycles (in 2012 and 2016)” said Timothy White, Hyundai-Kia’s senior powertrain manager during the SAE World Congress.
According to White, ISG is expected to produce a 3 percent increase in fuel economy across the entire model line-up of Kia vehicles while allowing Kia to meet the more stringent vehicle fuel economy requirements expected in North America in the next few years.
