We are excited to pass on the news of last Saturday’s season-opening race in this year’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Here at metro Detroit Kia dealer Summit Place Kia we see that the 2.5 hour endurance race culminated with a near photo finish as Kia Racing begins the defense of its 2011 Team and Driver championships in the ST class.

In addition to the exciting finish, Andy Lally set a new Street Tuner qualifying record and earns Kia’s racing program its first road racing pole. Here is more of the news from Kia Motors:

The momentum of the 2011 championship-winning season for Kia Motors America’s (KMA) motorsports program carried into 2012 with a mere half a car length separating the No. 10 Infinity Audio Forte Koup from a win at Daytona International Speedway.  Racing fans were treated to a near photo finish as Nic Jonsson and Andy Lally scored a solid second place finish at Friday’s season-opening BMW Performance 200 at Daytona.  The weekend started strong as Lally put Kia on the pole for the first time ever with a scorching lap time of 2:06.613, setting a new Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) Street Tuner (ST) qualifying lap record for the legendary high-banked circuit.  In his Kia debut, Mark Pombo qualified the No. 12 Forte Koup in the second position, making for an all-Kia front row on the starting grid.

“A podium finish is an awesome way to start the season.  The Continental series is really deep with talent, not just in the driver’s seat, but also in terms of engineers and mechanics,” said Jonsson.  “It’s great to have Andy back on the team to help us run for Kia’s first manufacturer’s championship.”

Rain made for treacherous conditions in the first 20 minutes of the race, but once the sun came out, the competition and the temperature heated up.  “The rain and wet track made for an exciting start, and we had a good scrap with the BMW guys along the way.  But my job was to pass the car off to Nic and let him do his magic,” said Lally.  “We’ve started this season the same way we did last season, with a podium here at Daytona.  Let’s hope we can finish it the same way, too, and score another championship for Kia Racing.”

Starting from second place on the grid, the brothers Mark and Mat Pombo had high hopes for their first outing in the No. 12 Infinity Audio Forte Koup and despite two on-track incidents, Mat Pombo ultimately crossed the finish line in a respectable 11th place.

“Achieving back-to-back podium finishes at a demanding track like Daytona speaks to the hard work and dedication of our team’s offseason program,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. “Andy and Nic’s podium finish is a fantastic start for Kia and Kinetic Motorsports as we look to repeat last season’s championship performance, and we are looking forward to more great performances throughout the 2012 season.”

The word is out here at metro Detroit Kia dealer Summit Place Kia: during this year’s Super Bowl, “Mr. Sandman” brings a dream to an unsuspecting couple in a 60-second spot to introduce the new 2012 Optima Limited.

Kia is also the first advertiser to premiere a Super Bowl acommercial in movie theaters prior to the game, itself.

The “Drive the Dream” campaign’s soundtrack includes The Chordettes’ recording of “Mr. Sandman” and Motley Crue’s “Kickstart My Heart” and, for the second consecutive year, Noam Murro, director of the upcoming Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ “300″ prequel, directs Kia’s Super Bowl commercial.

Here are the specifics from Kia Motors:

Dreams have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout history, and Kia Motors America (KMA) is tapping into the idea of dreams revealing true desires in a new 60-second commercial set to air during the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI.  In the spot, titled “Drive the Dream,” the new 2012 Optima Limited races through a Gen X couple’s wildest thoughts as they sleep, including:  Victoria’s Secret® Angel Adriana Lima waving the checkered flag at a speedway; an in-your-face Motley Crue concert; mixed martial arts legend Chuck Liddell battling in the ring; a heroine and hunk on horseback in a romance novel setting; champion bull rider Judd Leffew taming a bucking rhinoceros; and a fairy tale ending.

Kia returns to the big game for the third straight year with a fully integrated marketing campaign incorporating TV, cinema, digital, print, social media and in-dealership components.  In a Super Bowl advertising first, the complete “Drive the Dream” ad will premiere on February 2 on more than 18,000 movie screens nationwide in National CineMedia’s FirstLook pre-show program before airing in the game.

Kia also will run 15-second teaser ads featuring Adriana Lima on TV and in cinema beginning on January 27, while also leveraging the Twitter and Facebook channels of the spot’s celebrity cast.  A special expanded version of the ad will be available at YouTube.com/Kia beginning on February 2.

“With more than 100 million people watching the Super Bowl broadcast and millions more viewing content online around the world, Kia will once again deliver a memorable, one-of-a-kind campaign that entertains people before, during and after the game and leaves them wanting to see the Optima Limited fantasy again and again,” said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA.  “We selected an eclectic group of celebrities and personalities for ‘Drive the Dream’ to enable us to tap into a diverse body of fan bases and leverage each talent’s expansive social media footprint.”

Created by David&Goliath, “Drive the Dream” opens with the familiar notes of The Chordettes’ “Mr. Sandman” as a real-life Mr. Sandman enters the bedroom of an unsuspecting young couple who are asleep.  After being sprinkled with “Sweet Dreams” dust, the woman smiles and envisions herself on a horse with a romance novel-like hunk in a beautiful green meadow.  Meanwhile, Mr. Sandman accidentally stumbles and spills his entire night’s dust supply on the man, launching an extreme dream sequence that begins with the roaring guitars of Motley Crue’s “Kickstart My Heart” and Adriana Lima waving a checkered flag as he blasts around a race track at night in a Snow White Pearl Optima Limited with thousands of bikini-clad fans cheering him on from the stands.

As he circles the track with Lima looking on adoringly, the dreaming driver receives nods of approval from the band as bursts of flames and fireworks surround their stage as well as Chuck Liddell, champion bull rider Judd Leffew, and a pair of lumberjacks sawing a massive submarine sandwich.

“Motley Crue had a blast doing the Kia commercial,” said bassist Nikki Sixx.  “A hot model, a fast car, a pro fighter, pyrotechnics and rock n’ roll… What’s not to love?”

Much to the disbelief of Lima and drummer Tommy Lee, the high-octane dream turns into a fairy tale when the husband makes a conscious decision to drive the Optima Limited off the race track and into his wife’s fantasy to win her back from Prince Charming.

“After working with Kia for the Super Bowl last year I was drawn to work with the fast-growing brand again by the idea of exploring people’s ultimate fantasies in a fun and lighthearted way, and I am certain we have created a spot people will be talking about after the game,” said director, Noam Murro.

As part of the “Drive the Dream” campaign, beginning on Thursday, February 2 consumers can download a $25 pre-paid test drive voucher at Kia.com that is redeemable after eligible consumers visit a Kia dealership and complete a test drive of any Optima model.

At metro Detroit Kia dealer Summit Place Kia we learned this past Monday that 2011 Street Tuner driver champion Nic Jonsson will be reuniting with NASCAR’s 2011 Sunoco Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year – Andy Lally – in the No. 10 Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koup for another year of racing.

In case you haven’t been following GRAND-AM racing, Lally played a critical role in Kia’s 2010 “development year” and helped Kia earn its first-ever GRAND-AM podium finish at Daytona International Speedway in January 2011.

For its third year, the program will also be adding decorated brothers Mark and Mathew Pombo to pilot the No. 12 Forte Koup and strengthen Kia’s chase for its first-ever manufacturers championship.

Kia Motors America and racing partner Kinetic Motorsports will begin defense of the 2011 Street Tuner (ST) Team and Driver titles with new driver pairings for both the No. 10 and No. 12 Infinity Audio Forte Koups when the green flag drops on the 2012 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Championship (CTSCC) season at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, January 27.  Fresh off his 2011 Sonoco Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year performance, familiar face Andy Lally returns to the Kia Racing program, reuniting with ST Driver champion Nic Jonsson and the No. 10 car.  Lally and Jonsson were last seen capturing Kia’s first-ever GRAND-AM podium at Daytona in January 2011 before Lally left to pursue his dream of competing in NASCAR Sprint Cup.

“I’m thrilled to be included with Kinetic Motorsports and Kia Racing again for the 2012 season and am excited to be teamed with Nic for a run at the championship,” said Lally.  “The Kia Forte Koups are some of the best prepared race cars I have ever driven, and I am looking forward to getting the season started.”

“Having Andy back as my teammate again full time is very exciting for the whole Kia Racing and Kinetic Motorsports team,” said Jonsson.  “We are looking forward to kicking off 2012 and defending the Driver and Team championships.”

In addition to pursuing back-to-back championships, Kia and Kinetic will aggressively compete for the manufacturers’ title and two new faces will assist in that endeavor – brothers Mark and Mathew Pombo – who join the team after campaigning a MazdaSpeed3 for i-Moto Racing in the 2011 CTSCC.  The Pombo family has extensive racing history, and both Mark and Mathew got started at an early age beginning with go-carts and eventually moving their way up with major success in SCCA regional and national events and GRAND-AM’s CTSCC.  After battling for position on the track with the Kia Forte Koups last year, the Pombo brothers now find themselves behind the wheel of the No. 12 car and looking forward to making a statement in 2012.

“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity Kia and Kinetic have given me in the Infinity Audio Forte Koup,” said Mark Pombo.  “To get a chance to team up with the ST Driver and Team championship winning program from 2011 and drive alongside champions like Nic and Andy is something Mathew and I are looking forward to and are not taking lightly.”

Kinetic Motorsports owner Russell Smith commented on the new driver lineup for 2012, saying: “We are delighted and honored to be headed into our third season of racing with Kia Motors; we exceeded our own expectations for 2011 and were happy with the outcome.  We’re looking forward to 2012 with Nic and Andy back together in the No. 10 Koup, and Mark and Matt Pombo represent a great opportunity for us to field the No. 12 Koup with top level drivers. Both drivers managed to clinch the manufacturers’ title last year for Mazda, and we are fortunate to retain their services in 2012.”

The Forte Koups will debut a new look at the Daytona season opener with both the No. 10 and No. 12 Forte Koups sporting a new exterior paint scheme in Kia’s red and white corporate colors.  The new design was conceived by Kia’s U.S. design center in Irvine, Calif. and will be consistent across Kia’s expanded motorsports activities in 2012, including two turbocharged Optimas racing in the Pirelli World Challenge and the all-new Rio 5-door competing in B-Spec events.

And what better way to do that then to go to the source – those designers in Korea who helped bring the 2012 Rio from the drawing board (actually now they are using computer screens) to our showroom.

Back in December, we posted an article that appeared on the Kia Buzz blog site describing the all-new Rio’s exterior design story. Today, we want to share with you a second article that describes the story of Rio’s interior and color. Here it is:

Breaking Kia’s Design Code: The Rio Design Story (Interior & Color)

If “modern” and “youthful” were two keywords in decoding Rio’s exterior design, “firm” and “edgy” should be used to interpret its interior. Kia designers wanted to accommodate drivers’ needs to look good and feel good during weekdays when they are going out to work, as well as during sporty weekends. The result is a driver-centered spacious interior that is strong, sporty and comfortable – all in one. The center air vent layout is simple and horizontal, which was inspired by classical looking cars, but the center fascia is solid-looking with three accentuated cylinders emphasizing state-of-the-art technology. Even the arrow inside the speedometer was refined to be more forward-looking. A huge door pocket and a bottle holder are in place to increase storage space and a multi-tray is adapted to the cup holder for maximum storage capability. Designed to handle your desires and needs any day of the week, Rio is a beauty inside and out.

What’s the Meaning of Color? EVERYTHING

It is said that 60 to 80% of our perception relies solely on eyesight while the other 20% is made up of other senses. Kia designers wanted undivided attention from drivers. How? They created new colors from scratch, mixing and matching the colors with countless textile, fabric and materials to capture drivers’ tactile satisfaction as well as giving pleasure to the eyes. The search for the right colors was not an easy fit. Not only did Kia designers consider the environmental factors and surroundings of the would-be drivers of Rio, but they also considered cultural color codes. They wanted the color to scream out luxury, but at the same time give a feather-soft sensation.

The final three exterior colors for Rio, Wendy Brown, Signal Red and Electronic Blue, were Kia’s answers to their quest. Brown was targeted toward fashion-forward drivers who were stylish and chic. Other colors accentuated Rio’s individualism and dynamic sportiness.

Interior colors were also a result of a very long search for the ‘it’ colors. A black that has a hint of deep blue that glistens in a soft light dubbed “Armani Black and a grayish beige that conveys urban luxury were developed for Rio’s interior design.

The parts in the Rio where drivers would rest their hands were carefully thought out. The upper part of the crush pad was placed using IMG or In-mold Graining to give a more luxurious feel to the touch and NPC or Nano PU Cell was used to prevent damages from daily wear.

As I mentioned, design should reflect a company’s passion. The passion of the company should not be lost in translation in the final product. So it shouldn’t be a surprise for readers to understand that Kia’s passion is innovation. A continuous innovation to make a car that wows drivers. The Rio is a fine example of exactly that.
